My friend and I entered in an argument about whether she was polite or rude by asking me if I had ever heard about Chernobyl. Her point of view was that not everyone knows about this event. My point of view was that everybody should know about this event. I got more upset when I remembered that some months ago, after the re-screening of Titanic, a large number of people started posting on their social networks that they had always thought that Titanic was a fictional story…

By living in the US, I’ve found that it’s most likely that everyone here will feel deeply affected by the 2011 WTC event, one way or another. But at the same time, it’s interesting to see that some people have no feelings or thoughts for other even greater natural or man-caused catastrophes that have happened in the past years on remote places, such as Chernobyl. It’s also embarrasing to see how some of these events even become material for jokes and internet memes. IMHO, this shows a lack of culture and respect for all the people that lost their lives, health, relatives or possesions on such disasters.

There’s a number of events in our modern history that should be known and remembered by everybody because of the number of deaths they caused, the impact on the worldwide society, the impact on the technology, the impact on world economies, and the amount of racial/ethnical hate involved. It’s sad to see that some people know about these events only from movies, but hey, at least they know, right?

So, this is my list of “Events That Changed Modern History And Should Be Known By Everybody”, some of you may have more, or may have others, but please at least go google them. You know, general culture and good conversation starters.

In no particular order:

Chernobyl

9/11 WTC

‘04 Indian Ocean Tsunami

‘11 Japan Earthquake (and nuclear disaster)

WWII

‘04 Madrid bombings

‘10 Haiti earthquake

The Apartheid

The Titanic

The Congo wars

Yugoslav wars

The Exxon Valdez and the BP Gulf of Mexico’s spill

Peace
frixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16572238145709084824noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7241575.post-22546915635353048162012-10-24T02:53:00.001-05:002012-10-24T13:47:01.309-05:00Machining a TeamHow many times have you been asked, requested or forced to work in a team? How many times have you worked with a cool, nice, hard working team? How many of those teams were conformed by highly qualified, highly motivated people always willing to put all their weight in and doing ther best to not letting you down?

You might have been luckier than me, and worked in a couple or lots of them, but I think that in my whole working-in-a-team experience, I’ve only been in ONE team like that. And believe me, coming from the schools I come (UIA at Mexico City and CMU a Pittsburgh), and through all my work experience I’ve had the chance to work on so many teams… so many of them.

Early in the summer (more like late spring), we took the task of fabricating Polaris, a moon-poking rover that hadn’t been fully designed yet. We had to learn how to use machines, processes and materials none of us had used before, and do it while we were already being requested to deliver. We had to learn how to deal with pressure and hold each other’s backs from the vultures; deal with underskilled hands-off people to get complex parts built from scratch; learn from the best, and from our worst; learn how to close our ears to pointless ego-loaded discussions; learn how to motivate others to believe in their work and keep the flow going; motivate each other; caffeinate each other, give moral support and life cousel to each other, put the right beats for each other, bring the watts up, pump the souls up… All of this while learning how to live everyday with a team member we met the very same day we signed in for this proejct.

We had to develop fab methods that no one had done before, but just thought (or argued) about them. We had to subtletly tweak the designs, and make them fit flawlessly. We had to prove everybody that we were doing things the right way, and we had to prove it by delivering those things right. We had to be creative as a 5 year old to come with setups and toolpaths that would perfectly work for multiple inperfect pieces of different shapes and sizes. We had to pull so many all nighters. We had to document, we had to teach, we had to support, we had to clean, and we had to do it smiling.

Machining, cutting, trimming, forming, conforming, attaching, making… overall non-stop fabbing. What a better name for such a team than Team Machine?

Honestly, I think that it was that same name that brought us together. Being the only team that used a name and continuously pushed it on evey presentation or conversation really gave us our own identity and soul. At this stage of the game, I can’t imagine myself getting up every day knowing all what I have to do if I hadn’t my Team Machine waiting for me on the lab. And IMHO I don’t think that a bigger team would have performed better. Working with Rachel has been plain awesome. Yeah!

We’re the ones with dirty clothes, we’re the ones with messy hair. Look at us and you’ll know we’re real. We’re the ones that make shit happen. We’re the fucking Team Machine.

*Ok, so this was a very emotionally loaded post. Won’t appologize, man it up. It’s 3am, and I can’t sleep. For the past month and days I’ve been volunteering part of my “free” time to build and improve Romibos. Romibo is a cute little furry robot developed with the intention of helping autistic childs to improve their social skills by Origami Robotics, one more startup spun out of the CMU fertile gene pool.

Different from all the previously developed robot pets, Romibo will be affordable, programmable, controllable with an iPad, and as it runs on an Arduino, open source… you can even make it whistle like R2. So if the product generates enough buzz, we’ll see some of those awesome hacks the maker community usually amazes us with.

It seems that over the past months the little furry guys have developed great interest in the scientific community as they present a very flexible (and affordable) platform to perform research on autistic children. Because of such interest, Origami is planning on sellling dev kits for scientists and research centers and sepparately, kits to parents and to the general public.

The first version may be available pretty soon for around $700. They are expensive and they know it, but the first orders, mainly intended for research centers and universities, will (hopefully) generate enough cash flow to develop the commercial available kits for the general public, which will probably have a target price of around $200.

On my side, I'm already savouring my own home-made hack to my Romibo. Maybe adding a webcam and tweaking the Wifi card to upload stuff (like pics of your <strike>inner</strike> kid interacting with it) to the cloud?

Not raining anymore. No battery on my music anymore. Store the player on my pocket, sigh.

I raise my eyes and find me walking on a well known lonely sidewalk. The artificial yellow of the street lamps manages to reach my face, dodging almost every tree leaf it finds on its way.

It’s not warm, it’s not cold… its more like perfect.

Stop, breathe.

The smell of freshly poured rain fills the night and as I walk again, the music of the neighborhood escorts the sound of my steps. Two signing crickets and an out-of-tune ciccada, an elusive squirrel that doesn’t agree it’s time to sleep playing with the bark of that big, old oak. A wooden door, soggy, creaking as the night breeze plays with its old hinges. Keep walking, don’t care about the mud beneath my feet.

The wind´s also still awake and it makes sure I know it by shaking the last rain drops from the leaves of the trees I’m walking under. Door closes.

Walking by the local public orchard. The spices fill the air with their playful, tasty fragrances, freshly squeezed by the recent rain. Spearmint, rosemary, maybe some basil. It makes me think of you. Makes me wonder what expression you´d pull out of your collection to enjoy this tiny moment. It makes me smile. Thinking about your thousand faces makes me smile. Thinking about your big brown eyes, you make me smile…

…No more battery on my music. Yes, it makes me smile.
frixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16572238145709084824noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7241575.post-64393282207521336062012-04-24T15:43:00.000-05:002012-04-24T15:43:22.705-05:00The Music Container – Part 2I’ve been able to put more hours on the project and I’m getting very excited with it. I’ve been finding some similar projects on the web but most of them just play a song when the RFID tag has been read, or they’re using flat cards to read them. Most of them seem to be just explorations on how to implement RFID with Arduino, not that much of an exploration of the user experience… I really want to thank all of the guys doing this kind of projects for now I really know what’s happening here.

So, following with my Tinkerlab project: I'm back to business as I finally got some components: an Arduino UNO, the ID-12 reader, some 125KHz RFID tags and the USB base for the ID-12, all from Sparkfun.

The first thing I did was just plugging the USB reader to my laptop and playing around with the tags to see if I had bought the right type, and fortunately for me, I did (I had surfed way too fast on the Sparkfun website, so I was kind of afraid that I had bought the wrong ones). Then I hooked it up to the arduino and wrote some code based on what Martijn The did with BARRAGAN’s code.

The interaction between components is super simple. The ID-12 reads the tag and sends an ASCII code to the Arduino via the software serial. The arduino checks if the code is complete and translates it to HEX numbers, storing it in an array. Then it just looks for tag id in a database and if it exists, pulls the playlist name from another table in the database… Ok, it may not sound that simple, but believe me, it is. I’ll upload my code as soon as I finish tweaking it and spend some time cleaning it to make it usable for others (you), meanwhile, here’s a [very] simplified diagram.

The next step was making some foam spheres to prototype the music containers (I want to make the final ones out of wood, if I have the time, obviously), to see if the tags could be read from 1.5inches away. I used high density foam that I scavenged from the scrap box of the Polaris project I’m also working in, and then had some fun with the ID fellows using the lathe in the woodshop.
I split the spheres in half, drilled by hand holes just deep enough to hold the RFID buttons and double-side taped them together again. Some sanding was needed to get the final shape and it also helped me relax after a hard week.

The final RFID’d spheres were tested to see if the tags were powerful enough, and voilá! I’m one step closer :D
Trying the RFID functionality of the first 3 container prototypes

My next steps will be spray painting the containers to start getting some user feedback. Then I'll start working on the code to make it work as I want and make it run VLC and open a different playlist with each tag. I want to be able to edit the tag and playlist database without needing to modify the Arduino code and re-flash the Arduino. I will also work on the base, as I need to hack and tinker with an old mouse and be able to read it with the Arduino (for the playback controls). I also want to get rid of that annoying beep that is kind of driving crazy all of my surrounding peers, so I’ll need to solder the ID-12 to a breakout board and wire it the right way. It seems that I’ll also need to re-think the shape of the containers, maybe making them assymetrical, this just because the RFID buttons only work when they are flat and paralell to the reader… or I’ll need to buy another kind of RFID tag.

frixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16572238145709084824noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7241575.post-61723293639529627492012-04-23T19:59:00.001-05:002012-04-23T20:15:57.840-05:00The RFID Music Container – Part1Well, I don’t know if that’s the best name for this project, but at the time being I’m going to call it like that.

I started this project for the S’12 Tinkerlab class with fabulous Nick Durrant at CMU. I’ll be posting my progress in this blog to keep track of everything, and for any curious mind trying to do something similar.

The concept
The whole idea that gave birth to this project is that being a DJ is a pain in the ass. Back in the day, if you wanted to listen to some music, you’d go to your CD collection, pick your favorite one and put it in the player, hit play and relax, party, work or cry. But nowadays, if you want to listen to your music, you must open your computer or finger your iPod (and wear your damn headphones), and searching through them every time you want to listen to something is quite inconvenient.

So, following that idea, what I want to do with the Music Container is take people OUT of their computers if they want to enjoy their music, and provide them with a more intuitive and playful interaction with their music players.

The interaction
From the research I did, I found that people listen to their music mainly 3 ways: They select and open music files and do random play, they open a previously created playlist, or they open a pandora station.

Music is a tool for emotions. People listen to music to get in a mood, or to go along with a mood. So playlists are created with a specific mood in mind like: “this is for the afternoon”, “for when I’m really happy” or “music to concentrate and work”.

Therefore, the Music Container will represent a mood. Each sphere will contain a specific playlist that was created by the user with a particular mood in mind (following the actual behavior). Then, the user just needs to select the proper container (sphere) and place it on the base to play the desired music.

Each container will be identified by a different color, and the playlists will be created following the same process that the user actually follows. They just need to be linked to the container (I’m still thinking how, maybe a simple GUI made with Processing?).

The implementation
After some tech exploration I decided to go with RFID for its ease of use and implementation. Every sphere will have a unique RFID button tag inside and the base will have a ID-12 RFID reader. I’ll be reading the signal from the ID-12 with an Arduino UNO will send instructions to AutoHotKey or Gobetwino in my computer via serial connection. The objective is to send instructions to Winamp or VLC to open and play the selected playlists.

This project is similar to the one made by Roteno, and I’m very grateful for being able to find it, as it gave me some pretty good insights on how to make the technology work.

I’ll keep this blog updated with my progress on this project. I hope to have it ready before the end of the semester, as I really want Nick to play with it as well as all my other Tinkerlab classmates.
Places, situations, jobs, etc., everything is as good or as bad as the people in them.

Take this train for example. This business class car is super comfortable, I have a whole “meeting table” for myself, ac power outlets, a blanket and wifi. I have a beautiful view of the Amish country as I’m typing this, I have a copy of the NYTimes and the old man sitting across the alley is super polite. Man… I love this train.

Until, of course, we make a stop in Lancaster and this damn mister gets in the train, he sits just behind me and he just won’t stop snoring, snorting, coughing, loud chewing and farting… man I hate this train.

Peace.

frixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16572238145709084824noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7241575.post-74785961364154137192011-03-23T10:29:00.002-06:002011-03-23T10:29:28.505-06:00CourageYou are willing to become a full-time startup cofounder. Thinking he was really interested in the lectures I paid no mind the first two days, but after two days of scratching noise I started to pay attention to this strange persona.

He spent the entire day scratching his pen, writing with severe mind focus and strong hand movements, as if he was histericaly taking notes of some fast talking teacher. Tongue out, fixed stare, sweat drops running down his forehead.
His entire notebooks were filled with an odd sequence of numbers with no apparent relation between them, no apparent reason to repeat them, no apparent meaning. Drawing with a thick, large font, he seemed to be trying to put some style in his scratching.
If you don’t know what open innovation is you should start googleing it right now! (GIMF!)

The project is a great idea for it seeks to build a huge community of thinkers, designers, entrepreneurs and people in general that will work together to solve big social problems (which they call “challenges”).

Currently they have two challenges running and I joined the one focused on creating a way that kids would be more interested in eating healthy foods.

Great ideas came from all around the world and a network of both people and interconnecting ideas was quickly born.

It’s sad though to see how so many ideas, or “inspirations” as the OpenIDEO team calls them, are focused on creating web solutions or creating political or social pressure to the big restaurant corps such as McDonald’s and so.

It’s sad because with so many ideas pointing to the same direction it beomes clear how we’re losing the sense of responsibility in educating our children.

Yes, it’s lots simpler and easier to let a computer educate our kids, and also it’s easy to go and blame McDonald’s for not feeding our kids with the propper nutrients.

It will always be easier to blame someone else or throw the problem into someone else’s head.

Kids, and specially small kids, need a good example from their parents, they need to see and they need to be told what to eat and how to eat it (meaning: amount). We just can’t let a 4yo kid go to a pc and learn that carrots are good to his health and then come back to the kitchen and ask for a healthy carrot snack. We have to teach the kid why and how eating carrots will be benefical for his/her health.

A couple of months ago I also heard a local radio famous DJ woman (which presumes to talk about what society needs to do) talking about how evil McDonald was to our kids, that they should sell healthy food and that Cocacola should remove some sugar from their famous soda. Yes, it sounds great, but why not talk about how parents should avoid taking kids to McDonald’s and giving them fresh water instead of Cocacola? Kids nutrition is not in their hands, it’s a direct responsibility of their unwilling parents.

So, as I’ve seen, “Modern” society’s parents are each day less interested in dedicating enough time and effort to educate their children, and IMHO, I think this is the real problem that we should be focusing in.

Ingredients for 2½ lt:
1 cup chía seeds
9 cups of water (2 1/4 Liters)
1/3 cup of lime juice
1 cup of sugar*

Instructions:
Leave your chia seeds soaking in water for 2 or 3 hours or until they’re fluffy.

Mix water, lime juice and sugar just as if you were making your favorite ol’ lemonade, add your soaked chia seeds, mix, chill, serve and enjoy!

May feel wierd the first time to have all those funny chia seeds dancing in your mouth, but hey! they’re there for good!

*You can use any other sweetener. Chia seeds will add some flavour and may add some sweet taste to the mix, so you could add the lime juice and chia seeds, and then add sweetener just to taste.frixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16572238145709084824noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7241575.post-26669199123301448742010-02-15T14:02:00.003-06:002010-02-15T14:06:05.540-06:00La razón de los negocios

Bush’s such an asshole… heh”. JAJAJA

QEPD Dr. Golden. Será bien recordado.

frixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16572238145709084824noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7241575.post-21378923166970628992009-08-29T12:44:00.000-05:002009-08-29T12:44:56.578-05:00There and back again...again!
